Friday Fun Find

portrait of the Page family of Olathe, Kansas

From the Johnson County Museum’s collection:
This portrait is of the Page family of Olathe, circa 1925.
David Page, seated on the left, was a former slave who settled in Olathe in 1867.
Mr. Page was born in Virginia in 1841. He witnessed John Brown’s execution in 1859 and eventually escaped from his master and fled north to Ohio. He fought with an all-black infantry regiment during the Civil War.
After settling in Olathe, Page owned and operated a successful laundry business for many years. He passed away in 1938 at the age of 97.
