Photograph of postal carrier Cornelius Jackson in Merriam, Kansas

From the Johnson County Museum’s collection:
Photograph of postal carrier Cornelius Jackson in Merriam, circa 1920.
Jackson was a former slave who carried mail from Merriam to the Shawnee Mission Post Office for many years.
According to a newspaper article, Jackson’s wife died while he was working, “but he refused to go home saying he was responsible for seeing that the mail arrived safely in Shawnee and he would not trust it in anyone else’s hands.” (Johnson County Suburban, November 2, 1960)
